Rewrite the Code- Becoming Aware of Your Operating System

Why do we so often stay the same, even when we genuinely want a different outcome?
The way we think determines how we feel. How we feel shapes the words we use and the actions we take- or don’t take. As humans, we have an innate desire for familiarity and predictability. Because of this, we frequently repeat the same thoughts, emotions, and behaviors simply because they are familiar, not because they are serving us.
Over time, this familiarity forms belief systems- mental “programs” that quietly run in the background of our lives, much like an operating system on a computer. These programs shape how we interpret our experiences and perceive the world, often without our conscious awareness.
Anaïs Nin captured this perfectly when she said, “We see the world not as it is, but as we are.”
So, what if we could become aware of what was running the show from behind the scenes? What if we did not just look through the lens that perceives the world, but instead were able to examine the lens itself?
When we recognize that our thoughts drive our emotions, our emotions drive our words and actions, and our actions ultimately shape our environment and our overall state of being, something powerful happens. We begin to see the structure of our experience. And once we see the structure, we gain choice.
With awareness, we can begin to intentionally choose the thoughts we want to have, especially about the things we want to create in our lives.
This process begins with curiosity. Ask yourself: What is the outcome I truly want? And just as important, how does that outcome align with my core values? Then ask, How would it feel to accomplish this? That feeling- the emotion- is the catalyst. Emotion is what gives energy and momentum to change.
From there, shift your focus to action. Ask yourself: What is the most basic first step I can take to move in that direction? This step doesn’t need to be big. It might be a small action within a small effort, or a small action that initiates a much larger project. Either way, meaningful change always begins with identifying and taking that first step.
Start today.
Choose one recurring thought or emotion that shows up in your life. What thought would you like to choose instead? And what feelings arise when you make that choice?
You can either be pushed through life by your past or be pulled by the future you create for yourself. That future begins with a single thought- one you consciously choose.
